A parent was heard to say “Please God, let this be over soon”

…and then the tornado appeared

GALLOWAY TWP. – A High School graduation quickly turned from celebration to panic Thursday when a severe storm hit during the ceremony. Now, many are wondering why people were not brought inside before the storm reached the football field at the school where the graduation was being held.

“We just see this huge storm cloud just started covering over us and lightning bolts shooting,” said Michael Reilly who graduated from Absegami High School on Thursday.

Michael and his classmates looked on as a large wall cloud formed in the sky and approached the Absegami football field where the ceremony was taking place.

“It just started lightning so I was nervous for everyone that was sitting on the bleachers, I thought someone was going to get electrocuted,” said Kelly Reilly, who was there to watch her brother Michael graduate.

The severe storm brought hail, heavy rain, lightning and thunder to the area. Rather than stop, or move the graduation inside, witnesses said faculty rushed through the end of the ceremony.

“I just remember our teachers started going faster and faster and you didn’t really hear any names being called,” said Michael.

Then they threw the grad caps in the air and ran…fast.
